:) had this post a long time overdue …

I liked this movie and I looked forward to watching it after I saw the trailer below … I thought it was a hoot ..

The movie stars Jay Baruchel as Kurt, who is a TSA agent who is a loser in love and still pines for his ex who actually has a boyfriend and still hangs out with his family. Unlucky in love and wants to be a pilot, his life turns a turn for the better when he meets Molly, the perfect woman. The movie chronicles of how they fall in love. Spoiler: It has a happy ending. :) Molly, played by Alice Eve, is actually nice to Kurt and sees him for what he really is- a nice, sweet guy who has just been unlucky. The twist in the movie is actually interesting, but is workable in a way.

What I liked about the movie

  • The chemistry between the two leads.
  • The pop culture references sprinkled throughout the movie.
  • Kurt’s friends antics :)

I would recommend this movie as a nice break on a weekend.

I saw this movie at the theatre late last year, and surprisingly enjoyed it. It is a typical chick flick .. based on the book of the same title, by Elizabeth Gilbert of the same title. Eat Pray Love is about the journey of self discovery, a romance with one self, in which the character wanted to do, in the aftermath of her divorce, led her to a failed romance and a successful romance in the end.

One message that ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ wants to impart is that in the end, your happiness is loving and taking care of yourself. That is what Elizabeth realizes what made her unhappy even though she had a perfect ‘life’. The two romances that she had, the young actor and the factory owner showed how delicately she was trying to love someone without losing herself, as what happened in her marriage.

The trailer

The relationship with David was where she learnt to love again, in her own way. It was shown that she enjoyed David’s company and vice versa, but … she did recognize that she was moving back to the previous path.. and then she made the difficult decision to leave him and go overseas ( Italy ). She wants to take care of herself.

The Italy and India parts showed her rediscovering her passion ( Eat ) and inner self ( Pray ), taking care of her own inner needs. It was in Bali when she met Feliper who wooed her gently in his own charming way. Felipe sensed that Liz ( Elizabeth ) was vulnerable and defensive, and to his credit, did not push that hard :) Liz learned to accept her feelings for Felipe were genuine and she was not repeating her previous behavior, and found true happiness at last. Eat, Pray, Love was a journey she undertook to find and love herself. :)

What I liked about the movie

- The cinematography ( gorgeous, beautiful views of Italy, India and Bali )
- Julia Roberts ( .. she was softly charming .. :) )
- The Indonesia medicine man, Ketut :) he was entertaining each time he appeared …:)

Song Title Video with movie clips

For the current generation ( 18-25 years old ), the movie ‘Beautiful Girls’ will be an alien movie for them. Alien in my opinion, since it does not rely on the current ‘in’ idea in romance movies, the brooding look and corny dialogues. It relies on simple everyday conversations based on human observations. Released in 1996, it is now considered a ‘cult classic’, a movie that deals with a variety of themes, that relate to romance.

On the outside, it looks like a reunion with old friends. As you go deeper, the movie deals with question of how they should handle past, present and future romance. It is 90s movies like ‘Beautiful Girls’ that deal with relationship honestly, which make it better than new movies released in the romance genre nowadays.

The central character, Willy, deals with a present relationship that he is in, which he is in the ambivalent mode, while attracted to a potential future romance with Marty. Trouble is Marty is just 13 !
As for his friends, we have the former high school jock who is still cannot let go of his past romance while still wanting to hold on to his current romance. A friend who wants his past romance even though the ex has moved on, and fixated on beautiful models.

These storylines are a few which run through this movie. In this movie, the romances portrayed have an air of wistfulness about them, in a way that the destination is still unclear where it will end.

The crew of actors do a great job in making this movie work, with the chemistry among them. You will find yourself following them, enjoying their banter and learning about who they are. Screen time is equally given to both to the male and female characters, so there is no ‘sexism’ here. Both views are presented, so you can see both perspectives.

One of the characters, Gina, has the best lines in the movie, which in a way sums the romance dilemmas. The clip is shown below

In the end, there is most closure for the parties involved, though in my opinion, Willy leaves a little door ajar ;-)

What I liked about the movie

    * The colorful characters of friends in the movie, and their interaction… people that we can identify with ..

    * The plotline … simple to understand..

    * The relationship between Willy and Marty

    * The role of Andera in making things clearer for Willy, Paul and Tommy

PS / I do recommend the soundtrack, some nice music there …
PPS / when checking out new dvd releases at the video store or Netflix, check out ‘Beautiful Girls’.. it will be worth it :-)

My review

For a romance movie for a more mature audience, As Good As It Gets is highly recommended. When it was released in Christmas 97, it received favorable reviews from critics and audience alike.

The story is based around the relationship between Melvin, a successful author who is a misanthrope, Carol, a single mother waitress who serves him, and Simon, his gay artist neighbor. Melvin’s world revolves his writing, eating at the place where Carol works and is the only one who is willing to serve him, and shutting off his neighbors including Simon. An unfortunate event befalls Simon and it leads to the three of them being involved. The romance is between Melvin and Carol, while Simon in the end, becomes a cheerleader of sorts for both of them.

One thing that struck me about this movie is how Jack Nicholson shines in this movie, just by being the actor he is. I like his portrayal of a character who is in the beginning is pretty horrid and in the end, becomes likable. Helen Hunt does an amazing job as a single mom who reluctantly accepts Melvin’s role in her life, and in the end, finds love in a unlikely man.

For the romantic in me, seeing how their ‘relationship’ develop despite their obvious differences is interesting. How they compromise is a joy to watch.

One of my favorite scene from the movie is below ;-)

What I like about the movie

-the interaction between the two main characters, Melvin and Carol

-the role plays by Simon, in bringing out Melvin’s humanity

-the storyline that follows an unlikely relationship that comes to fruition

I remembered watching this flick around the late 90s when it became a surprise hit. Granted it is a bit raunchy ( it launched the whole raunchy comedy in my opinion ), but the core of this romance movie is about love / sex ( finding it ) Although the pursuit of having sex for the first time is the main purpose of the four main characters, each of them learnt a lesson about finding sex / love. The best romance in the movie, in my opinion, is Oz and Heather. The jock and the choir chick get together in the end ;-)

What I liked about the movie

- the unique storyline of the four main characters .. it was simply done and each story did not overwhelm the other storylines.

Although it started being about Jim’s quest, it also showed the other 3 friends ‘quest’ to do ‘it’ for the first time. Kev’s pursuit of doing it with Vicky, Oz unlikely development of a relationship with Heather and Finch’s subtle use of other unorthodox ways to find a willing partner …

- the chemistry of the two main couples .. Kev – Vick and Oz – Heather

Both couples present two different views of romance – how to proceed as a couple / how to continue a relationship despite different perspectives of each other

- the crassness of Stifler … playing a typical jock perspective on sex and love

Admittedly, his crassness is his major attractiveness … but we all have met the jock who is crass but gets the girl ;-)

The movie trailer

A review

  • Based on the Nicholas Spark novel of the same title, this movie stars Mandy Moore as and Shane West as Landon.
  • The plot is simple, a teen guy and daughter of the town minister become friends due to circumstances prompted by the rebel boy’s actions.
  • Their friendship blossomed as they needed to collaborate on the final high school play, and in the end, it turned into love. He discovers the meaning of life while she discovers how beautiful love is.
  • The leads gave a touching honest performance and there was real chemistry between both of them. The supporting cast was also good in that they did not hinder the movie and thankfully, the movie plot is simple and straightforward

What I liked about the movie

I watched this movie early 2000s and was struck by the simplicty of the movie.

  • The performance of Mandy Moore and Shane West as the two leads
  • The music that accompanied the movie .. mostly pop songs, with a classic grunge rock track ‘Cannonball’ – The Breeders
  • The background of the place – a typical American town

PS / do get the novel as well, as the book complements the movie well

PPS / Get this if you want to get back with your ex …

To open 2011, I thought I would like to review a flick that inspirational in terms of its message. Forrest Gump .. it is a classic, no doubt for two things .. 1) his never- ending positivism and 2) his undying love for Jenny ;-)

The review

The movie shows a period of life of Forrest Gump, a simpleton, whose life seems to interwine with the major events of the 60s, 70s and 80s. We see him interacting with Elvis, playing football for Bear Bryant, fighting in the Vietnam war and investing in Apple ;-) throughout the whole experience, his love and devotion for his childhood love, Jenny, is unshakeable, even though, I think, Jenny treats him not as well as she should be, till the end, when she finally married him.

I like the scene below with the classic line, ” I may not be a smart man, but I know what love is .. ”

What I like about the movie

- his unshakeable positive attitude :)
- his love for Jenny

Lessons Learnt

- if the love is meant to be, it will be
- stupid is as stupid does :)

Admittedly, Christmas just passed by, and this made this review a little bit late , but I would like to review one of my favorite Christmas romance movies of all time, Love Actually.

The trailer below

A review

What interested me about the movie was the cast .. admittedly a credible popular list of mostly UK actors / actresses. I always had a thing for movies with ensemble cast because when it works, it really does ( example Traffic ). The storylines in this movie was interesting as it covered almost all kinds of relationships , from young and old and for me that the big L is immune to age. Everyone, at all ages, still and will go through it. From the British PM to the little boy, it shows how love affects in many different ways. From the 10 relationships shown, I have to admit that I feel for all 10 as I have myself been or seen similar situations and I think that is the strength of this movie as it portrays love in a realistic yet idealistic way ;-) ( it is a form of escapism )

The Christmas theme revolves around the events of the movie that occur around Christmas .. and the hit song … ;-)

What I like about the movie

- the interplay between the characters
- the simple life lessons ( watch the scenes between the sister and the brother )

Lessons learnt

- sometimes it is sweet, sometimes it is bittersweet.. that is what love is..

With the news of the director Blake Edwards passing, I immediately thought of his best movie ( in my opinion ), Breakfast At Tiffany’s, which is also one of the best romantic comedies of all time. The romance between Holly and Paul was the key driver in this movie … both of them discovering more about each other in their pursuit of their ‘dreams’ so to speak. Of course, the main spark in this movie has to be the excellent performance of Audrey Hepburn playing Holly Goodlightly ;-)

With New York City as the location, the site also plays a secondary role .. where it shows both main characters chasing their ‘dreams’ in a city that promises much. A lot of activities in the movie features the various locations in the city, including the iconic ‘Tiffany’s’ store.

Below is the original trailer

I watched this movie a few times and I have to admit that Holly is a character that you cannot easily forget … idealistic yet cynical, sweet yet sad .. she is darling … my favorite scene of hers in this movie is when she played ‘Moon River’ on the guitar by the window. That moment encapsulated her character in the movie … below is the clip of that lovely performance..

Lessons Learnt

- The things we do for love ;-)
- You cannot run away from love

Why you should watch it

- Holly Goodlightly :-)
- the views of New York

This movie was released earlier this year and in case you don’t know yet, it is part 3 of the Twilight saga. What makes this movie special ? Read on, after the trailer …

Review

The central theme of the Twilight series so far has been the relationship between Edward Cullen and Bella Swan. In this movie, Jacob the werewolf joins the ‘party’ :-) I think this movie is the best of the series so far in terms of storyline and mood. The Cullens are given more screentime ( Jasper & Rosalie ) and we get to see other vampires ( Volturi & newborns ).

The romance is represented in three parts – true love ( Edward / Bella ), unrequited love ( Jacob / Bella ) and manipulative love ( Victoria / Riley ) .. I think Edward / Bella’s relationship is given the best treatment, as it should be, as their relationship is the foundation of Twilight.

On the whole, if you are a Twilight fan, this movie does not disappoint you. All the characters are there, the fighting scenes are nice and the ‘threesome’ romance is alive. On the other hand, if you are not a major Twilight fan, you might feel a bit underwhelmed with the other two relationships. Oh well, whatever works for you then … ;-)

Lessons Learnt

- You have to be with someone who makes you alive / complete.
- Sometimes, the best for your love might not be with you.

Why You Should Watch It

The three main characters – Edward, Bella, Jacob … that should be enough ;-)
